BEC Letter to Legislators

The Baltimore Education Coalition thanks you for your continued efforts and commitment to improve education for students in Baltimore City. Through our work together over the past three years, we have prohibited over $75 million in education funding cuts. We want to continue our collaborative efforts of success!

This year, the Baltimore Education Coalition (BEC) wants to work with you to preserve Baltimore City’s education funding and ensure that our students and communities have the school facilities they deserve.  In order to do this we ask that you:

  • Work to pass HB304/SB533 to allow block grant capital funding for school facilities in Baltimore City.
  • Work to pass HB578/SB906 to give the Mayor and City Council the ability to leverage dedicated revenue sources for school construction, which will allow for greater impact.
  • Work to preserve in the state budget the 1% Inflation Factor for schools funding in Baltimore City, recognizing that removing the inflation factor would cut $7-8 million from Baltimore City schools.
  • Take action to ensure that the cost of teacher pensions is shifted to neither Baltimore City nor Baltimore City Public Schools. If the shift cannot be prevented, meet with key decision-makers to ensure that the cost of teacher pensions to Baltimore City is wealth-equalized.
  • Meet with constituents from your district in order to share with them what you have done to fulfill these three commitments, between 6:45-7:15 on the date and at the location for your district’s BEC Legislative Night.

BEC members from your district look forward to meeting with you in the coming weeks at each BEC district meeting. More details regarding the date, time and location for these meetings can be found on the following page.  Thank you once again for your leadership and commitment to Baltimore schools!
